A great podcast via Education Sector entitled “Improving Student Success: What the Higher Education Community Can Learn From Minority-Serving Institutions.” I’ve only been able to listen to half of the podcast; however, the discussion provides some excellent starting points for colleges – particularly in providing support services for Hispanic and other minority constituencies. Jason Riveiro is a leader of the new Hispanic generation. Originally from Houston, Texas, Jason arrived to Cincinnati six years ago and quickly filled a leadership vacuum in regards to Hispanic rights and issues in the Tristate area (Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana). In a very short time, Jason has established himself as an advocate for the rights and issues that impact Hispanics in this region. As the State Director for the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) in Ohio, Jason led the way to bringing next year’s LULAC national convention to Cincinnati. In this edition of HTM Podcast, Jason discusses his efforts with LULAC as well as shares his perspective about the Hispanic workforce.
I was recently on the Northern Kentucky University campus to spend time with the Office of Latino Student Affairs. As a reminder, they’re hosting the first annual Educating Latinos for Kentucky’s Future (ELKF) Conference this Thursday and Friday at the NKU campus. I’ll be there sharing some tweets and blog posts during the event.
I also had the good fortune of meeting a bright and very energetic student by the name of Gabriela, and she just happens to work for the Latino student office. Like many Hispanic students in college, Gabriela is a dedicated student, actively involved on campus, and works a couple of jobs; however, this doesn’t diminish her energy or vision for the future. She was kind enough to spend some time with me to discuss her perspectives as a Latina college student in this installment of the HTM Podcast. Gabriela’s insights are very telling. She illustrates why the Hispanic college student experience is so unique and why Hispanics can bring so many experiences and skills to any organization. I hope to invite other Hispanic students as talented as Gabriela to future HTM Podcasts. Enjoy!
Welcome to the first HTM Podcast!
This opening installment of the HTM Podcast focuses on Latina Leadership, an important topic when you consider Latina leaders are starting to make great strides in the business world. The HTM Podcast has been in the works for some time, so I’m excited to get it started with a wonderful guest, Aurelia Flores, Founder of PowerfulLatinas.com. Aurelia founded PowerfulLatinas.com in 2007 as a company that gathers together Latina women to learn from and share with one another. After becoming pregnant at age 15, she graduated from high school a year early and went immediately to college where she received her B.A. in Sociology. She received her law degree from Stanford Law School and then was awarded a post-graduate Fulbright Fellowship to study in Mexico City. Aurelia has been practicing corporate law for over ten years and specializes in intellectual property. Aurelia also volunteers for various non-profit organizations. Aurelia, her story and PowerfulLatinas.com have been featured on TV, radio, and in print publications, including the recently published book, “Aim High: Extraordinary Stories of Hispanic and Latina Women.” She is a proud mother and her son now attends Georgetown University.
